Countdown For A Cure Foundation

Our Mission

Countdown For A Cure Foundation is a collaborative force dedicated to accelerating mitochondrial research and advancing the field of mitochondrial medicine. Mitochondrial dysfunction lies at the heart of nearly every major chronic disease—from early aging and chronic fatigue to neurodegenerative disorders like ALS, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Multiple Sclerosis; from obesity and metabolic disorders such as diabetes to cardiovascular disease, cancer, autism, and mitochondrial disease; as well as connective tissue disorders like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, ADHD, and schizophrenia. This isn’t just about rare diseases—it’s a universal health crisis that touches us all.
We emphasize the vital importance of mitochondrial research and its profound impact on countless lives. By partnering with leading scientists and medical professionals, we ensure that every project we fund drives meaningful progress toward transformative treatments—and ultimately, cures—for conditions rooted in cellular energy dysfunction.
Many conditions are treated in isolation without addressing their underlying causes. We believe that raising awareness about mitochondrial health and the interconnected nature of our health is essential. Mitochondrial research holds the key to unlocking breakthroughs in genetic disorders, aging, and a wide range of diseases—it is the foundation of longevity and vitality.
Time is of the essence. We are committed to improving the lives of individuals and families affected by these conditions through robust research funding, comprehensive education, and dedicated efforts to raise awareness about mitochondrial health, all while providing unwavering support. Our mission is to ensure that every person, regardless of background, has hope for a healthier future.
Together, we are igniting a mitochondrial movement—creating a future of longer, healthier, and more vibrant lives.

How Common is Mitochondrial Dysfunction

Extremely common. Research shows that mitochondrial dysfunction is a central element of many common disease and conditions. If you have seen a person with any of these diseases and conditions below, you have encountered mitochondrial dysfunction.

Evening of Energy 2026

Saturday, February 7th, 2026 at the St. Regis Atlanta

Join us for our 3rd annual black-tie gala benefiting mitochondrial research. The evening will feature a cocktail reception, silent and live auctions, an inspiring program, a seated dinner, and a lively afterparty.

Each and every one of us is going to suffer from a mitochondrial disease, and all age-related disorders are known to involve mitochondrial dysfunction. This means that any cure developed for mitochondrial diseases could potentially serve the entire world population by protecting, preventing, or reversing age-related disorders.”

We All Have Mitochondria.

Mitochondria exist in nearly every cell of the human body. It’s responsible for creating 90% of the energy you need to sustain life and support organ function. The quality of mitochondrial function is crucial in nearly every aspect of human life.

Why Mitochondria Matter!

As scientists have learned more about the mitochondria’s role in health and disease, they have concluded that mitochondrial dysfunction is at the root of diseases and conditions that affect the young and the old, in ways that can range from subtle to devastating, and is even responsible for the aging process itself. The list of known diseases and conditions with a mitochondrial dysfunction component is long and growing longer. In fact, research suggests that mitochondrial function may be the unifying theme- the cornestone of medicine, perhaps – of understanding a spectrum of diseases, conditions, and why we grow old.
